The best output so far with the ST's Volvo B5254 engine is that B5254T7 version presently fitted in their own smaller T5 models which produces 230bhp with Volvo's own software in the same ME9 ECU.

The 260bhp 5 pot turbo that has been in the S60 T5 is not the same engine: that T5 engine is very, very different having a narrower bore that prevents the bore splitting that occurs with the 'ST' engine.

We then come to the recently discontinued and yet again different 'R' engine that produced 300bhp in standard form, again entirely different to the 'ST' engine in all respects except its similar bore diameter which makes it as weak at high outputs as the 'ST' engine.

The most interesting area is whether Volvo's engineers have incorporated the narrower bore into the engine that is going into the new Focus RS. If they have then we can safely get 400bhp plus with no block mods.. Otherwise the RS will have very, very little to commend it over the current 'ST' for £4000 or so extra...for those with higher outputs in mind.

I was led to believe the S60R has the same engine, cos when you look under the bonnet it looks exactly the same, surely volvo dont change their engines that much???

Is it the remapped ST's that suffer with bore splitting or can this happen on the stock engines, never heard of this before surely this can't be common as tuners like Wolf and Superchips wouldn't give warranties.

Could it be a defect in the build quality on the odd engine ?

 

Exactly it Andy, afew of the ealrier MY06 builds had come cracked bore walss, but havent heard of that problem happening for a long while now, ford put it down to a faulty batch.

From what I have read on this site over the past year or so there have been just a few cases of split bores, all caused by increasing the engines' outputs. To my knowledge all were replaced under warranty by Ford dealers who were not able to discern the true reason for such damage.

At least Ford replaced them under warranty, i wonder what mods these engines were running?

I asked something similer and was told it had to do with the tax band its in. I dont think the st is a fast car standard.People expect it to be alot quicker cause the engine is 2.5, Where for insatnce the renault magane is the same bhp but only has 4 cyninders? Fishes car with all the mods does 156mph, What would a standard car do? I really thought the standard car would do over 155.

Tax bands is correct. Any higher output and it would fall into Band G. Additionally they don't NEED to give it 260-270bhp out of the box, and if they do it leaves them nowhere to go with newer models.

 

You also need to think about Insurance also - pushing it over 230 bhp would push it out of the reach of most........

surely thats gearing

max rpm x ratio = fixed top speed.

even with less power you have an RPM ceiling.

Most were I agree, but there was at least one member who had the problem on a completely standard car
