As some of you probably know I've recently bought a second hand gearbox, had it refurbished and fitted it to my car.

I now find myself with a spare gearbox that I could put on eBay and try to sell or a few other options I'm thinking about, but before I follow up any of those routes, does anyone have use of a gearbox?

It shifts fine. I believe the gears/synchros themselves are fine, but there's speculation about either wear on the differential giving it backlash/play and it was mentioned today it seemed like the differential bearings might be failing. If it's one, both of these or something else wrong I don't know, I've not opened it to find out yet, but hopefully would be fixed with a replacement diff (maybe an LSD? ;))

My car is knocking on 135k so it's hardly a new box but would likely be perfect for someone doing what I did to have a box ready as a straight swap. I was worried about getting the box open and finding something unexpected that would leave me without my car for a few days or more but didn't have to worry about that with a rebuilt box ready to go.

I don't like eBay and I don't like the idea of scrapping it. This box has done me well for quite a few years, and was a vital part of my very very loved ST. Throwing it away seems wrong.

Soo... Any one have any interest?

If the diff gears are shot, fitting an LSD won't help as it's only the centre, not the gears themselves. The LSD bolts to the large crownwheel.

IMO the diff gear will be ok (they're very tough) and the bearings are likely worn causing lateral play which will allow the crownwheel to move to the side. This would manifest as backlash as the pinion can't move side to side but you also get backlash from the driveshaft joints.

A set of diff bearings may be all it needs and you would do that when fitting the LSD to the crownwheel, although the pinion bearing may also be worn and contribute to the backlash as the pinion could move in and out a little.

Without an LSD the load is carried unevenly on the diff bearings. Fit the LSD and because it proportions torque much more evenly, spreads the load and thus wear. The LSD is actually good for the box and increases it's torque capacity. Also good for reducing driveshaft wear for the same reasons.

A LSD makes quite a big difference to the way a ST225 drives.

It is the biggest difference between a ST and RS when it come to handling.
I would say about 50% of the difference Nigel.

The RS has a much wider track, taller overall gearing through larger tyres, Revoknuckle (not massively better though), plus the more graceful spool up and overall engine response. There's a lot of difference over the ST.

I would guesstimate I've probably grabbed about 90% of what the RS has even with all my mods but it's still not an RS.

For all the information, I bought a gearbox for ÂŁ35. The diff and the refurbishment I've done are what I would have done to my box if it was opened up at 135k miles anyway. Night have cost a bit more to get the box I bought cleaned up as well but saved me worrying what I might find.

I cannot be bothered with trying to sell on eBay. If someone wants to make a donation for it it would be appreciated but if it can be useful rather than scrapped.

If no one bites on here I'll ask the gear box specialist if it's any use to them and if not I'll probably crack it open have a look at my self, add the gears to my man tin maybe and scrap the rest.

So before that happens, any interest? Lol

My comments are about the handling and what is the biggest (not only) difference between the two cars!
