Idle speed query

Hello...

I have had my ST2 (Std - No mods) for only a few days and so I have not had a chance to study this fully. But..can you tell me whether this is normal?

When I start the engine and the car starts to idle...the idle speed is approx 1200-1300 rpm. (this seems high to me!!)

However, once I pull away and then come to a junction / stop / etc the idle speed is approx 600-700 rpm.

Is the 1200-1300 rpm on start-up normal? Is it the engine warming up? or does my car have a gremlin?

There are no noticable signs of a problem (misfire, etc) I'm just a bit curious!

Cheers for the help!

Marcellus - how quickly does yours return to 900? 1-2 seconds or longer

Mine seems to go up...but rather than settling back to 700-900 it seems to sit at 1200-1300. I waited about 5-10 seconds but it did not go back to 700-900. It seems to maintain the higher idle speed until I intervene by driving off!

Ant,

Auto chokes were fitted to cars with carbs (you're proabably old enough to remember these!)., but cars with direct injection rely on the ECU to adjust the air/fuel mixture......so endith the lesson of the day!!

I have noticed that the car starts up with hgh revs, but it drops back to around 900rpm by the time you get your seat belt on.

Sounds normal to me, depends on the weather as to how long it stays at higher idle longest is ~ 30seconds. When I drive off and then stop at a junction it's back to the normal ~ 900rpm. As for young uns (not sure i count tho) I had to use a manual choke on my first car - a metro of all thing's oh how times have changed

I remember that.....

Starting a car from cold used to be an artform in those days.

I was told (and I'm not sure how true or relevant this is) that a similar thing on my old XR2i (zetec) was caused by a system that injected air into the exhaust manifolds to get the temp of the exhaust gasses up for the cat to work properly as quick as possible.

Not exactly sure if this is true but it explained the initial noisy idling on startup followed by an instant smoothing a couple of mins later pretty well.
