Looked through the service history on my 2017 Focus , and 5/30 oil has been used at every Ford service (,its done 6,000 miles since the last service in March 2022) i have topped up a couple of times recently with 5/20 which is what is NOW recommended by Ford. Always buy my oil through Opie OIls ,and they only recommend 5/30 , its due an oil service so i think i will be staying with the 5/30 it has had through out its 40 odd thousand miles and fitting an oil catch can at the same time.
How frequently are people checking their oil catch cans and do they retain much oil ? Would be interesting to here other members experiences.

Hi Macca,

I think the majority use 5/20 now, although I don't think 5/30 is going to do any harm, I'm using it, I don't have a catch can yet, so pricey for the decent ones!! , the universal ones look **** aswell, I have 67k miles and I'm dying to look and see the carbon build up on the valves to see how grubby they are, I'm sure someone will be along to help out with volumes of oil retained 👊🏻

True there are some cheap looking catch cans , airtec do a nice breather kit but not cheap , they have an in-built dipstick so you can monitor the usage , and agree about the 5/30 oil , my car has used it since new and the engine is healthy , so will carry on and use genuine filters etc.,

I change my oil every 4K, which for me is yearly, I check the can every six month or so, I made my own catch can kit, using the Mishimoto copy off eBay (probably made in the same Chinese factory) bought a few meters of 1/2” fuel hose and made my own bracket, so it fits in the same location as the Mishimoto. Works perfectly and cost less than £30.

Looks really good , there are some gaudy coloured catch cans on sale ,but black looks factory fit , appears emptying the can every time the oil is changed is sufficient , on my to do list / next oil change in a couple of months

5w-20 has been recommended by Ford way before 2017 my last MK3 ST was a 15 plate and always had 5w-20 put in at servicing. It’s thinner and protects more when cold.

Castrol also recommend specification WSS-M2C948-B
