To Buy Or Not To Buy An X Box 360???

Evening peeps

I feel I should get an XBOX 360, just because everyone else has one!

Seriously though, Argos have 3 different versions: XBOX 360 Arcade, XBOX 360 and XBOX 360 Elite - is it worth paying extra for the Elite one?

Two more quick questions: does it play DVDs to a good enough quality to get rid of the DVD player? Does it connect to the internet wirelessly?

Sorry for the stoopid questions

Thanks in advance

Even better, you can stream DVD's from your videos through your wireless router and on to the TV.

DVD's are so last year......

Donna, not 100% sure here but I think the Elite is the only one with an HDMi output for 1080p output to your TV (if it can do 1080p) Mine is an older boggo standard version without HDMi.

I use mine to play DVD's through an RGB cable and it's fine quality for the picture, the only small grumble I have is that the sound never gets that loud - it's ok but if you crank up the volume it never seems to get that much louder. The output from my £15 Tesco's DVD player deafens me on the same volume setting on my tv. I think the Xbox doesn't amplify the sound signal or so Gav said once. Maybe not an issue if you've got a surround sound system.

Wireless connection works too, you just need the wireless adaptor which plugs into the back of the Xbox http://www.amazon.co.uk/Xbox-360-Wireless-...r/dp/B000AYTQ7O

My son loves his, but get an extended warranty with it as his and all of his mates have gone wrong.. The dreaded red light!! Think it only costs a few extra quid but has already saved jnr (ok my wallet) a few quid!!
Shouldnt need the wireless connector if you plug the Xbox straight into the router. Im lucky, everything is behind the tele including shed loads of dust

Mine came on after 2 years and it went back for repair to Germany FOC.

You have to get one Donna! It plays DVDs really well and can connect through an optical cable to a surround sound system to give you full Dolby 5.1 surround sound too! If your DVD player is a Sony or JVC you probably cant play copied DVDs very well but the X Box plays them! The Elite has a bigger hard drive! A wireless adapter is available but i just use a patch lead to plug it into the router for reliability and ease of setting up! It will also play CDs and Photo CDs! You can stream virtually any media from a Windows Media Centre equipped computer straight to your telly too! The Elite comes with all cables including and optical cable im not sure if the lower spec ones do! Hope that helps!

Oh yeah nearly forgot! The games are blinding too! Graphics are immense and playing something spooky like Doom 3 with the surround sound on is really scarey!

Thanks very much for your replies - you all are most helpful as always

I've been doing a bit of reading on tinternet as well, and I've just reserved a XBOX 360 Elite at Argos to pick up tomorrow. £195 including 3 games and an additional controller seems like a good deal, plus you get a £10 argos voucher.

I'm sure I'll be back to hassle you all on how to set it up etc

the only problem with the xbox is errr .... well no, can't think of anything

Make sure you get GTA4 though, you may wish you hadn't though as you blink and you're suddenly 60 years old and still playing GTA xD

XBOX 360 all plugged in and I have to say I'm massively disappointed as the noise of the actual XBOX is so loud, I can hardly hear the game - does it get any quieter???

At least it is quieter when playing DVDs

unfortunately not, that is typical of the 360 due to the heat it puts out. You'll get used to it, it's normal and they all sound the same. Won't make as much noise playing a DVD because it's not working as hard and the fan can spin slowly.

If you makes you feel any better my PS3 eventually gets hot enough while playing a game that the fan cranks it and sounds exactly like a 360...

Since you bought the elite and have a decent hard drive, saving your games onto it will make it loads quieter.
Hi, I take it you mean the games you have bought, how do you save your games to the hard drive.

on the xbox dashboard, under the "my xbox" section, it'll show what game you have in the disk drive. Highlight the game and press either x or y (the one for game info!). One of the options shown will be "install to hard drive" select this and it'll take a few minutes. Once done, you still need the disk in the xbox to play it but that's only to prove you have the game and not just installed a mates copy! With it on the hard drive, games load much faster than from the disk!
