hi there Ive been wanting to get another car to use as a run around to work and back...

i do about Miles a day to and from work so of course didn't wanna rack up the millage and wear and tear on the

these a ford mondeo near my house for sale it a R reg 1.8 turbo diesel and is only asking for £650 for it.. now Ive not looked at it or drove it yet but i was wondering does anyone no what these are like on running cost?
and would it be cheaper to drive this to work everyday instead of the
?

i no i have to consider extra TAX ,MOT,INSURANCE, DIESEL cost but it may work out cheaper in the long run than driving the
.

any views or tips welcome

I think someone worked this out once and after you take into account the costs of running 2 cars, ie how many tanks of unleaded you could get vs buying taxing and insuring the mondeo not including fuel, it doesnt break even for a long while.
i dont think it would be cheaper, could end up costing alot more if something drastic goes wrong on the mondeo.

i think if you have bought a car to not drive it there was no point in buyin it in the first place! might aswell have gone straight for a clapped out mondy!
cheers for the reply`s.

the mondeo is diesel so would cost same to fill up but them run for longer and i could get the mondeo for about £500 so if something does go badly wrong which i cant fix myself i would just scrap it or sell it on etc.

and i no what you mean about buying a car and not driving it but its Miles aday on the motor way so would really put the miles on the
so lesser the miles the better it will come when (if) i ever sold it in the future. and i would only use it for work so would still drive the st on weekends and also saves me driving it over the winter period and having any problems due to ice or salt on the road

It sounds to me like you've already made your mind up that you want the second car

Not knowing exactly how many miles you are doing it is difficult to make an accurate judgement as to what would work out better financially, but for me, I bought my ST to drive it for me, not to worry about what I may get when the time comes to sell it on - hope this helps

Depends how long u plan on keeping the Mondy for. £600 car + £500 insurance + £50 mot +£200ish Tax = £1350 = putting 27 tanks fuel for the ST or 6750miles of ST driving that u are spending on a 2nd car. Thats providing your insurance is that cheap and not taking into account any additional wear and tear on either car.

It makes sense as a car, but not really running it against another car unless you do serious miles, but you havent stated the mileage.
as Donna says, i bought mine aswell for me to drive not worry about putting miles on it and holding value. at the end of the day its going to depreciate just as much probably sitting on the drive as much as driving it and putting an extra 5k on it.
I have an St24 and the Focus ST and its great to have a 2nd car . Put the Focus in the garage when the weather is bad and when you dont want to risk the Focus on a trip out or parking. The insurance will be quite cheap on 2nd car if you use admiral

My curiosity has got the better of me now - please can you just say exactly how many miles you do a day - please

As Donna had already said, it looks as though you have already made your mind up. I dont know how many miles you do a day, but if is was me I would rather spend the £1000 that you would spend on that diesel thing and spend it on mods for the ST.
As at the end of the day its a Focus ST and its there to be driven and thats why I bought mine.

Clearly the numbers don't work on your keyboard! What is the exact mileage you drive?

If its big miles, could make a difference, but then you have to ask yourself why have 2 cars - just get a decent diesel, and there are loads that can be bought.

Having a second car can be a great thing, as wear I now live near Moss Side in Manchester (And not having off street parking) I would not dream of leaving the ST anyway near here. (Not the Ideal place to live, but have to do it for work!!)
I'v got my self a 1.2 Corsa for running around, and leave the ST in my parents garage for the weekends when I go back.
You appreciate a car soo much more when you havent driven it all week.
As for the costs the corsa gets 60mpg on the motorway when my focus would only get 26-28mpg, so the saving are massive if you do the millage I do! (Plus I put regular fuel in the Corsa which saves a few bob too.) Plus with the rate I get per mile at 23p, I can pay for the fuel and insurance on the company as its prety low (Insurance that is). Plus the money I'v saved has gone on the mods i'm having fitted at Profile on the 14th (Anyone going around then??)
Additionally I put 12.5K on the ST in 9months, which has now slowed to around 500-600 per month. I'm not bothered about putting miles on my car, just at the rate I was going I would have had 40k + at around 3 yrs, which judging by most of the cars sold on this forum is very high.
You just need to do the maths as people have said and see if It makes financial sense to run a second car, everyone's situation is different and you are the only one that can make the call.

It does sound like you have made your mind up anyway.
