ive been pricing up the mk4 on drive the deal and its coming in around 34,500,this includes the first yr tax so would it then drop to £165 a yr afterwards? which is cheaper than my current st3

In your case (based on previous conversations) I believe this would be the case as the list price for your car is under £40k. The extra £355 a year for the first five years applies to the list price, before any discounts. So it's possible to incur that extra cost when speccing up an ST if you tick all the boxes.

As Sean says it is possible to incur the extra tax bracket for 5 years
When calculating the full cost it is the full retail price of the car plus the full retail price of any options you add, then, if over 40K you pay the extra tax for 5 years.
It is not assessed on any discounted costs you may receive

thanks, thats good then as the full price is around 38k so i can tell the wife it will be cheaper to tax than my current one
just out of interest,if i bought a used one that was orig over the 40k limit when new would the higher tax bracket still apply? or is that just for the original owner/buyer?

It stays with the car for 5 years.

We've been discussing this on the MK4 Orders thread in the Mk4 Non Technical Section.

If your car retails at over £40k when you buy it, the road tax from year two to year five will be an additional £1340 on top of the £165 a year.

I priced mine up the day I collected it back in September. As I had originally ordered a mk4 which had HUD and Sign post recognition as standard, when I was offered a mk4.5 they had to spec match as well as price match.

With the cost of those as extras plus Performance Pack, Green paint and Pan Roof I just sneaked under £40k by about £600. I had thought about adding BLISS but glad I didn't as it would have been very close.

yeah thats a lot of extra cash over the 4 yrs, blis is definately on my list,i wouldnt be without it now,its one of those things you dont think you need till you have owned a car with it ,if i do go for a mk4.5 then i think ill have to buy new as theres no private ones for sale as they arent old enough and the used ones the dealers have are just as expensive as buying new from drive the deal
a nicely loaded 5 door manual is over 40k - it'd be interesting to see which options you would have / not have in order to stay under 40. Driver aids or green & pano? Personally I'd avoid PP

The base price is £36,855 though?
I guess that's the DTD price. Ford OTR price for that spec is £38,430 and I believe that's the price that would be assessed against the 40k threshold for high rate tax. I'm with you, I'd rather have the tech than pano roof and green paint.
yes im with you now, still below the 40 though so it would work out ok

ive another question on these tax rates,if for example i bought a car that was 3 or 4 months old and orig cost over the 40k limit how much would i have to pay to tax it? as the first yrs already been paid on the original purchase price, would it be classed as the 2nd yr when i taxed it?
I bought my car ex-demo, 3 months old, and I didn't have to pay the extra bit for the first year.

so you mean you just paid the basic rate?

I paid the standard 'first five years' rate, but I didn't pay the even higher first year rate.
