Puncture Repair...ripped Off?

257 Views 15 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  morty1970
Just a quickie....my misses got a puncture on her KA so I removed the wheel and took it down to a local tyre centre and they charged me £18...does this seem right? I even asked for a discount seeing as they didnt even have to remove the wheel from the car, they didnt give me one!

most i have heard of is a tenner and a few places do it for free in the hope for your buisness when you need a new tyre
i use kwik fit and i just give them a fiver for a packet of biscuits and a box of teabags {there words not mine}

Depends on where you are I think.
I've paid £15 in the past.
I've paid £15 for a tubeless repair too. I think that it will vary with where you are and how busy the workshop is. £18 is at the top end, but I don't think it is excessive.
You were shafted.
The strips they use for puncture repairs without taking the tyre off cost a pound to buy and take about a minute to fit.
Wouldnt be going back there again chief...
I paid £22 at national tyres, £10 at a local garage.QUOTE(goonturbo @ 3 Nov 2009, 11:11 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>You were shafted. The strips they use for puncture repairs without taking the tyre off cost a pound to buy and take about a minute to fit.Wouldnt be going back there again chief...I think he took the wheel off himself, not they didnt remove the tyre.
Thats even worse. the patches are pennies and take minutes to fit.

Thats some garages for you, but if your stranded what can you do?
Very true phil, if your desperate what can you do... if i tried to charge customers prices like that i would be told to
right off or worse. lol

I used ATS last time and got charged £19.99 wasn't impressed with that and won't be going back again.

Since then I took a smart car wheel and tyre for a repair (already off car) and kwik fit did it for free
Well thanks for the info...didnt realise it varied so much.

When they repaired mine they took the tyre off and used the plugging method, it took all of five minutes.

The thing is I bought a pair of Falkens from them only two months ago and feel a bit peeved that they didnt budge on the price, trust me I wouldnt have let them do it if Id have known the price in the first place...anyway just emailed them and told them that I wont be using them again when I purchase my rears in a few weeks time on the strength of what theyve just charged me...there loss!

Cheers again

What you need to consider is that a proper tubeless repair has to be vulcanised from the inside to work. The old method of plugging them from the outside was banned many years ago as those repairs were unreliable and caused many accidents. A properly repaired tubeless tyre will perform exactly as an undamaged tyre would. The materials are cheap - it comes down to how much they charge for the labour. A standard service costs around £170 and all they do is change the oil and oil filter - cost about £40.

If you were not in a position to shop around it does put you at a disadvantage.
I went to get my tyre repaired today thinking they'll just do it for free. Turns out i needed a new tyre as i had ruined the side-walls. So my tyre repair cost me £330 for two michi's lol

I know most Kwik fits will do it for free, but at the same time i would expect to pay £15~20 if charged. When i worked for Halfords we charged £12 to change a bike tyre lol...
