Oil Sump?

hi all as some of u might have read i recently had my car stolen
but it has since been recovered but it has some damage to the oil sump. the question is its at a recovery garage at the moment and there is oil leaking out the bottom would this mean that the car wasnt ran dry of oil or would this just be what is left dripping out? ive been told that if the sump is damaged then the engine is goin to be
but if there is still oil leaking could this be a good sign that the engine is ok?

thanks

Did you actually check the oil level? If you did and it read ok, then is the oil clean or dirty like it hasnt been topped up recently. If that shows the oil is slightly dirty then i dout it ran dry. Start it and see what it sounds like is what i would do tbh.

alright m8 cant start the car as have no keys cant even look at the car as its at the recovery garage goin through the insurance but just wanted to know roughly if its likely to have engine damage as it might get written off if it needs a new engine but as there is oil still leaking out the bottom it might not have been ran dry heres hoping

thanks
More likely to have been over a speed hump too fast and clouted the sump. any dents in the bottom?
If theres oil dripping out the chances are that it will still have oil in it. But how much is another problem, you need to find out how much is in it tbh. That way you can tell if its ok or seized up. Also with out starting it you wont really know what it runs like. As it would of been thrashed so things may have given up etc

Hope that kinder helps

hi m8 havent seen the car so not sure on the full extent of the damage to the oil sump car was lowered.would it have just cracked it slightly enough to make it just leak out slowly as the
who stole the car left it parked up and locked it so he might have noticed what he did and just pulled over heres hoping

thanks mat

Most cars have steel sumps so they tend to dent rather than crack. If it has had a thump it might have broken the seal around the edge somewhere.

Aluminium sump on the ST engine, quite a few cars have them these days

My Calibra had a cast alloy sump too, but did not realise that they were common now. Thought that the cost difference would ensure that the car companies went for a cheap pressing rather than a casting.

The ST has one for sure and I'm pretty certain the engines we put into Jags and Freelanders at work have them too. Dunno engineering reasons for them, the ST one has an water/oil cooler built into the back of it.
Yep afraid the st does have an ally sump. IF its dripping out then its promising, its only if its got a big hole in it you need to worry. A slight bit of starvation would not be terminal to an engine, most good oils nowadays have elements added to help this. Plus the ST sump is slightly baffled so gives a slightly better chance.
