Could be just a stone or bit of grit stuck between the pad and the disc? there's still loads of grit about and i had a similar sound the other week and it dissapeared on it's own

+1 I had it and it was a horrid loud metal on metal sound, reversed the car hard, then went forward, cleared it. Check your discs for deep scratches.... As advised by my mechanic

Some good advise there. I seem to get alot of rubbish inbetween my disc and disc gaurd and 8 times out of 10 reversing alittle quicker than normal ( in a safe place! ) sorts the problem.

could be the metal backing plate - mine did this a while ago and by pushing the plate away from the disc it stopped (can push through wheel spokes - no need to remove wheel)
