Hello all..
you'll probably all think I'm mad, but I've just got rid of a 2006 BMW M5 in favour of a Focus ST that I pick up on Saturday!
The M5 was a true super car.. but in all honesty, after the novelty has worn off, it's just far too expensive to run. They look great on 'top gear' screaming around tracks at 200 mph, and power sliding around empty country roads.. but when the reality hits home, I spend most of my time stuck behind a queue of cars doing 20mph all because the old dear at the front of the queue in her Matiz doesn't want to change from 2nd to 3rd..
I live on the Isle of Man.. home of the TT races and no maximum speed limit!! But that goes hand in hand with an elderly population who retire here for tax reasons, driving around at unbelievably slow speeds with little or no places to overtake safely.
so, add that together with 13mpg, a litre of oil a month (normal apparently) and servicing costs that would put the McLaren F1 team to shame, and you've got a very expensive white elephant! (although mine was black).. Mine even had a new gearbox under warranty at 24,000 miles at a cost to BMW of £8,000.. imagine having to stump up that cash yourself once the warranty runs out in April? That's my main reason for getting rid of it to be honest.. oh, the fact it devalued by £7000 in the 10 months(!) I had it..

Anyway, moan over about the M5.. I'm collecting a 6 month old 3,000 mile 2009 Panther Black Focus ST3 on Saturday.. Yay! When I was in my early 20's, (I'm 38 now) the most fun I ever had was in my Series 1 Escort RS Turbo, and I'm looking forward to getting back to driving performance fords again. I still reckon I could get that RS Turbo around the TT course quicker than the M3's and M5's I've had since.. (it was chipped though, of course!)
The twisty turny roads over here I reckon are far more suited to something like an ST. When you do manage to overtake 'Miss Daisy', I think the nippiness of the ST will prove far more usable than the M5.

I have a couple of questions though!
Firstly, I plan to fit the mountune kit pretty soon. (ie, next week!).. does anyone have an opinion if this will increase/decrease fuel economy? I know you'll all say that with the extra power I'll use more throttle.. but as a lot of my driving is stuck behind people, I'm wondering if the conversion will actually aid economy as the engine will be mapped better.. the dealer told me he knew one customer who reckoned he gets an extra 2 or 3 MPG since fitting the kit.. any thoughts on that?
Admittedly I'm not buying the car for fuel economy (nothing can be as bad as 13mpg I'm used to) but I'm just curious.

Second question.. and I'm pretty sure I know what the answer will be... My car comes with the middle of the range Sat Nav system.. the one with the smaller colour screen and the Blaupunkt SD Cards.. I think it's the travel pilot FX?
Is it possible to retro fit the DVD NX unit in without too much hassle? I like the extra screen size, the extra functionality, and also the DEACT controls in the same unit.
I'm not bothered about having different climate zones.. I would just love to upgrade from the turny nob things you get as standard. I suspect it's not that easy to do.. but worth asking.

Thirdly, has anyone found any alternative sources for maps for the FX system? The SD card that the unit comes with is April 2009.. but it doesn't cover the Isle of Man! Not a huge problem as I do actually know my way around believe it or not.. but it would be nice to be able to practice with it over here before I go across next month.. and also, if there is a map disc I can get with the UK speed camera database on it, that would be handy.

Well, that's all I can think to ask for now.. I'm sure I'll think of more stuff when I collect it on Saturday!

Hey mate,

I just came from an M3 and in all honesty the ST is sooooooo much more fun to drive, you will honestly love it!!

I always wanted an RS Turbo when I was kid and that's the reason that pushed me into getting a fast ford, and so far I'm loving it!

Edit - I been averaging 15 mpg so it's not much better than the M5 you had.

I reset the MPG and went london to portsmouth and got 28MPG driving 80 odd the whole way there.

|But most my driving is town and the odd blast

Hi Glyn, welcome to the club mate,
what ever happened to the Lotus??

The Mountune is excellent pal, and the fuel efficiency is only a problem if one uses the loud pedal a lot. To be quite honest, most of my 19mpgness comes from cold starts and short journeys which is another problem with the IoM of course...

The remapping of the ECU should help with better fuel economy. I've heard loads of people say they get an extra 2-3 MPG but it all depends on how you drive too.

to the club matey!

I have the Mountune and although I only had the std car for a week before cracking and getting the conversion
I believe the fuel economy is marginally better as others have said (around 2-3mpg+) when driving normally. However due to the increased performance I do find the loud pedal gets used more often than before which does see a decrease in the miles returned from a gallon!

Simply put though steady motorway miles around 70-80 wil see 30-33mpg

B roads and the odd blast should get about 25mpg

and town driving around 20mpg

You'll love the
mate. Welcome to the club BTW.

I found that using the Mountune with an higher octane fuel, that i have gone from a weekly average of 22mpg to 26mpg. I have had 37mpg on a run, but kept to 60 & 70mph.

One thing i like is just a touch of the pedal and the motor takes off.

Most of my driving is town driving with the odd blast on the motorway. And i dont drive slow when i use it. Ask Mr Silly Billy BMW 330 last night!
Why do some people try it on?

The
is good fun and looks so good when modded up. If ya can, get it lowered on Eibachs too.

Just a little note....

I popped into Tesco for fuel lastnight, and a Essex Police Evo 10 was behind me, so i had a chat with them, as i know someone on the interceptor squad. They told me they had Mountune
's on trial last week, and the copper said, even though the Evo was a second up on 0-60 times, the
was the better car all round and drove so much better. Makes you feel better when you're told by people who drive fast cars that yours is up there with the best.

Enjoy the car mate.

Thanks for all the comments chaps..
KrisL.. I still have the Lotus of course! I've been using it for the past two weeks since I got rid of the M5 and was waiting for the focus to arrive. you may not recognise it now as I had it repainted a couple of years back... to Ford Panther Black! I've always loved that colour.. which is why I just bought the Focus in that colour too!

got the focus today!! Fantastic! although so far I've not had a proper drive yet as I only brought it back from the dealers just now, and they kindly gave me a bunch of flowers.. I had to drive carefully enough not to have them flying all over the place.

Already managed my first upgrades as well. Swapped the indicator bulbs at the back for some mirrored ones I pinched form my M5 before I traded it. I notice the fronts have yellow plastic in the lamp units so mirrored bulbs wouldn't really make a difference.. but hey, I swapped them anyway.. at least I know they're cool mirrored ones in there

I've just been on ebay and ordered some mirrored bulbs for in the wing mirrors, and some mirrored brake light bulbs.. Should just look a bit nicer. That will probably be the only external mods I do, as I'm not into aftermarket add ons.

As well as my day job working with computers I'm also a special constable, working out of the Roads Policing Unit over here.
We took one of our Standard ST's out for a bit of a run over the mountain last night, and I can honestly say there is no way an M3 or M5 would be able to keep up on those roads! my palms were proper sweaty when we'd finished.. and I was only the passenger!

It's great being part of the Ford family again, as I was about 15 years ago.. I can now slag off reps in their 330 diesels again!!

Again, thanks for the welcome everyone.. most appreciated!

Glad to hear you still have the Lotus, and congrats on your new ST. Are there any ST owners on the Isle of Man that aren't associated with the police or am I the only one
