Hi All,
I have had my ST3 for about 9 months now and from the start i have been insured with More Than. The only reason for this was the price (£330) for myself and my wife. We are both 41 (we dont look it!!!!)
My car is standard apart from footwell lights!
For a few weeks now i've been thinking of a cat back Mongoose exhaust or even the full system if the funds allowed.
Being a sensible sort of guy i thought i'd ring More Than just to enquire how much they'd take off me for this pleasure.
Guess what!!
They say if this mod went ahead they would have to cancel the policy!!!!!!
I cant believe it!!!
My policy runs till the end of March so i will be looking elsewhere at that point and i'll just have to wait a little longer before i get that new shiny exhaust!!
Anyone had similar experiences who can recommend a more understanding insurance company?

I'm wondering now what More Than would say if they found out about the Footwell Lights!!!! Lol!!!!

Most mainstream insurance companies wont cover modifications but you will find a few sponsors on here that might be able to help.

I found after getting knocked back by Direct line a few years back when I got my ST and insuring with one of the sponsors who specialize in modded car it was a good few hundred pound cheaper than it was when standard

I'm insured with the RAC, seem to be very mod friendly, got mine for £340 with all mods declared, Dreamscience DSCI, airtec intercooler, mongoose catback, eibach springs and an autospecialists CAIS. I do live in the sticks though so that might have a bit of a bearing on the price.

You need to describe it as a stainless steel replacement echaust.

Tell them it is not performance enhancing and simply fitted due to the life time garantee etc. It is no different to a kwick fit exhaust except the material it is made etc.

If they still say they will not cover it, complain ask them how the risk has increase etc?

Tim,

While you're on. I'm insured with you. I declared all my mods during the quote process and on the subsequent paperwork sent by your company, however there is no mention of them on your schedule/certificate. Is this normal?

Steve, without being rude, it is all well and good having a moan about More Than but it is really down to you to check if they are modification friendly before you started the policy.. as ever, cheapest isn't necessarily the best and a modified car requires a specialist insurer.

So I too will be changing in feb when my renewal is up!

Yes indeed, but my point is still a valid one. A lot of people assume that all insurance companies cater for modifications, in reality they do not.

Hi
Yes, totally normal as it's the proposal form (where you stated the mods) which is the contract of insurance.
Don't worry! (I've posted a slightly more detailed reply to this question on your other post).

I was insured with 'More Than' but had to move when I got my ST Mountuned. They wouldn't touch it even though it has its own ABI rating and is a variant rather than modified. I went through the hierarchy, not just the first adviser to answer the phone, trying to get a sensible answer but ended up moving. They didn't want to know.

And it's all very well some insurance experts advising you check policies before buying, but in reality a year is a long time and things can change. I can understand some insurance companies not understanding various modifications if they're done in stages, but an upgrade such as the Mountune variant, which has its own ABI rating and TUV approval, should be recognised.

Thankyou Flightmech,
When i first got the car i wasn't considering mods at all. Just gratefull that at last i can get my hands on an ST.
Now i've spent time on this site i realise that one day i may start playing with a few things.

I did tell more than that the stainless steel option of exhaust was purely for the lifetime guarentee aspect but they were adament that the "exhaust is on the list of no-no's so we cant insure"

Complain!!!! Ask them the questions with regard to the risk, how is this any different form fitting mud flaps to a skoda fabia or paintdsheild (they will not know what this is) what they are refering to on their list is a boy racer chav exhaust on his nova, this is not the case here, this is a replacement exhaust that matches the dimentions and look of the OE exhaust simply made form a better material etc (assuming you were going for subtle pipes). Tell them they are in effect restricting your attempts to keep your vehicle well maintained that is a requirement of the policy etc. This will also reduce their risk, no chance of a rusty exhaust falling off anf hitting another car etc.!!!

Make them work and remeber the devil is in the detail!!!!

Obviously this will not work if you go for big tail pipes etc.
