So I just popped out and going round a roundabout lost all gears.. the cluth still goes in and out but I can fully engage gears without any difference in engine tone or rpw.. there were no noises from the gearbox previously no hint that this was about to happen.

Its totally standard and doesn't get hammered, the clutch has never slipped and I don't do banzai starts etc..

Any ideas?

If the clutch was to totally fail I'd have expected you'd get some warning?

I'd wonder if something has come undone in the clutch or drivetrain, or possibly a gear cable come off? you should be able to see the ends of the cables just in front of the battery box. You could get someone to operate the gears while you have a look under the bonnet.

Have you had any clutch or gearbox work done recently?

Hope it's nothing serious

Nope, no work... It feels like the old 205 I had, there was a bit of the clutch linkage that used to fall out and I lost every gear. I've also had a clutch cable snap on another car and it felt like this.

Theres literally nothing in any gear but like I said there was no warning, I've got 78k on it and I use it a lot and I'm quite in tune to these things.. it hasn't felt different.

If its any help it was all very serene, like I didn't notice anything knocking, banging, thumping, there wasn't anything obviously hanging out the bottom of the car although its quite dark clearly.. it wasn't until I noticed the revs rising with nothing happening that I sussed I'd lost drive and just coasted to a halt... really odd.

Sounds like driveshaft to me. If one side pops out, you will loose drive across the whole axle. Have you had any work doen recently that would have required the driveshafts to be removed??

Try jacking the car up, keep the car in gear and see if you can rotate the wheels or hear any metalic noises.

It sounds more like the gear linkage has come adrift or a snapped selector in the gearbox?

thanks mate, I needed to get on with it so I just got towed to a local garage and it all became a bit clearer, every time I turned the wheel there was a knock knock knock sound.. everyone seems pretty convinced its the drive shafts now.

! still, I gather easier to fix that clutch or certainly gearbox which was my fear.

yeah its the drivers side driveshaft.. I was quoted £350+vat for the part by the garage, presumably via ford.. onto ebay.. £110 delivered

I know I probably shouldn't but I currently can't say no to a £500 repair becoming a £250 repair.

Should have it back tomorrow/thursday

really need to get my **** together and get it sold and swapped to an EO low miler.

That's a great price, if it does the job then you've had a result.
