Ipod Solution For New Focus Owners

I really wanted to have my ipod weired into my Sony headunit but found nothing out there that really worked until now.

You can now play your ipod though the radio's AUX and charge it at the same time buy using a Kenwood KCA-IP200 cable

Plug the cable's 3.5mm jack into the Aux input and feed the cable through the glove box and behind the central console, I did this by just tucking the cable along the bottom of the console then into the armrest which has a hole already in it, when you have your ipod and USB end in the armrest get a USB cigarette lighter thingy and put this in the lighter socket and theres you ipod power.

Just use you Aux to listen to your ipod and as the ipod audio is coming direct from the ipod and not through ipod headphone socket the audio is much better quality, the only downside is there is no control from your cars radio, only the ipod but still you cant have everything.

Cable and USB cigarette lighter socket thing will cost you about £30, the cable can be brought from www.justkenwood.co.uk

Hmm think im going to have to try this out, well spotted mate.

Excellent find.

For those that don't have power in the arm rest, and so are routing the cable into the compartment normally occupied by the ashtray, you will need a low form-factor 12v --> USB adaptor. Otherwise, you won't be able to close the flap over the top of the ashtray compartment.

Haven't tried it, but found this:-

That USB adapter looks to be the same as the Duracell one that I've got. Unfotunately you can't close the flap with this still in place as it still sticks out too far. http://www.focusstoc.com/forums/style_emot...default/mad.gif

Not sure if there's an adapter out there where you can??

Oh - bummer.

Have you got a picture of the Duracell one?

How about if the USB cable was modified to be at a right-angle - i.e. not sticking straight out. Would that solve the problem do you think?

I can see my soldering iron getting a work-out.....

Would be good to somehow integrate it into the centre console or create another power socket behind the console, hook it all up to hide all the wires and just having the ipod connector end sticking out of the ashtry bit.

Think I have myself a job at the weekend

Also there are some on ebay for under £10 !

Its an easy job to do this just get the wiring diag from the ICE page (its pinned) and take power from the back of the headunit. I did this for my drive & play which allows me to control the ipod from my centre console

There is plenty of scope to mod the original wiring for power, lighter socket etc.

I haven't tried any of the aboive though as I use the Parrot 9200 which is awesome, and I found out today it plays internet radio via my iPhone and 3G whilst driving.

Here's a link to the Duracell one. With just the adapter in place you can't close the flap, so using a 90 degree cable won't work, that was my idea before I bought it.

I thought you ST guys got the centre console and armrest like us poorer focus owners, wouldn't this be the best place to put your ipod as the power socket in there is tucked out the way, I got mine in there with me USB plunged in with no problems

I think the facelifts might have this, but I have the pre-facelift and has a boring crappy one with a rear ashtray on the back of it. I wish I had this now

Ford sell the same cable mate its just a bit shorter, finis 1529487. Its £24.15 inc vat tho and the aux end is straight not an elbow.

A quick q is the quality noticeably better threw the normal socket as opposed to headphone? I thought it was the same?

Cheers.

Sound quality is very slightly better as the sound isn't going through the ipod amp, you get a direct unamplified signal out of your ipod so your head unit gets the best possible signal

The kenwood cable is about 1.5 m so ideal for my install as the ford cable is to short to reach the arm rest

aaah I see, that makes sense then!

Or for a similar alternative see my post about the Kensington Liquid Aux - comes with a little wireless remote too which you can stick to the stalk with a 3M double sided sticky pad and then you can control your ipod too!

Good find though!

This was the route i took for the i-pod , with the drive and play . But now the lead that goes to the i-pod from the drive and play control unit has broken somewhere along it's length and trying to find a replacement it proving a right pain !!!!
