Hybrid Turbo's

330 Views 8 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Thunder#59
So has anyone here got one?

I am thoroughly researching them at the moment, and am in two minds about them

I have been advised by someone very highly regarded on here that they arent worth the cash, as they dont make much difference

Considering who told me this, I am inclined to forget the idea...unless someone on here can fight the corner for the hybrid

anyone up for discussion?

To be honest fella unless your looking to spend a serious amount of cash I wouldn't bother. "A_beast33" or what ever springs to mind

Speak to a guy on here first, he's a club sponsor, user name is "don kalmar union" and he's well clue'd up on the ST engine. IIRC he's going to be fitting the
turbo to his car. This dude knows his stuff

I would not bother mate . For the money you are likely to spend on the turbo you can get over 300BHP with other mods . Much more than 330 and you stand a chance of cracking a liner and the cv joints wont like it for too long either . !!!
interesting

anyone here donr the conversion got anything to add?

I had a CR330 and run it for two years without a problem, loved it.

When I did it though there were far fewer options available than there are now (for example Dreamscience were still in the hype stage and Bluefin was putting out 255bhp) so a lot more to think about now.

and what about the guy who bought it after you ..... ?

Look anyone on here will tell you i love Code:Red's work and can't rate them highly enough. I also had the WR330 package and after a number of engines i sacked it off down to a CR285, currently done about 5k (inc Nurburging, 0-60 runs, 1/4 miles) in about 4 months with no problems so far :touchwood: which is more than i managed in 18 months of having the conversion.

We fitted different pistons, rods, investigated gaskets etc and Gary and his team spent countless hours on it trying to get it to run the power with reliability. To his credit he never gave up on the car, after others had (myself included at one point).

I am NOT slagging Wolf/Code:Red off, the conversion comes with a warrenty and they honour it, all i will say is if you like to actually drive the car then i wouldnt bother with a hybrid, warrenty or not its not good having your car off the road for 3-4 months at a time.

The only possible way of running it could be Aquamist as i know menzies26 on here runs this with the PS350R map (i think?) and has not had any liner issues, but again this is ONE car out of many, this is more of the exception rather than the rule.

Alot of people who have had the major problems are not really on here anymore, for what ever reasons but i can think of at least 5 people who had hybrids and engines went bang, and i KNOW there must be more. (Not all cars where tuned by one company either!)

For me, in the end, i had too many problems and also knew too many other people (various maps/tuners) running hybrids who had had major failures, so i took the hybrid off and put the standard turbo back on with a level 2 map. I get more enjoyment out of the car now knowing i can get from A-B and have some fun without having to keep the AA on speed dial!

Hybrid turbos are ok but tbh i kinda think there isnt a lot of point running the because of the poor manifold they are mounted on. Youlld be better off with a 300bhp package and a LSD. We are going to be offering our own packages soon, now that we are on the verge of joining forces with a well known mapper.
