Engine running, the solenoid is under the gear gator so don't worry too much, pull the gator up and it is like a silver disc with a wire going to it on the right hand side set in the plastic housing.

At standstill it allows you to get the car in reverse but not 5th & 6th, when you are moving say 15mph+ it switches so you can get 5th & 6th but not reverse. So if you can get 5th whilst stationary but no reverse then the solenoid is stuck

Ok cheers Dennis , I'll give it a go

I thought you mentioned loosing a bit of oil, adjusting the gear cables is easy (situated under the maf) get someone to wobble the knob from side to side to see which is which, you then just have to remove and refit the dip to move the centre position left or right, it could just be a little adjustment is needed if the box has been out.

Yeah that's got to be it, surely the garage should of done this? it's going back to them anyway on tues as its leaking clutch fluid big time, lost all pedal pressure and an Undertray covered in clutch fluid .........not happy!!

Nasty, leaking brake fluid is not good

To be fare to the garage if they did not know about the solenoid that stops you from getting certain gears, they may have tried to adjust the cables to get around this (a ford dealer did this on mine when 5th & 6th was locked out due to a faulty ABS sensor (they were pleased with themselves they had got my gears back until I told them how it should work and they responded -after slagging off car forums and suggesting I did not know what I was talking about by saying 'we wondered what that thing was next to the gear stick pivot' doh!) and remember this was a ford main agent (although they did do a diagnostic and fixed the abs fault for ÂŁ50 :0) ) a quick readjust back and all was fine)

Typical ford lol.
Dennis , so to adjust the cables I am adjusting the left to right cable yes? Is this the one with the Orange button on?
So I just unclip that one centre the gear stick then move the arm on top of the gearbox to line up with the cable and clip back in?
Cheers for your help Dennis

You might have to make any adjustments with the car in gear. For instance, my old Fiesta that had a rod linkage, IIRC you had to slacken the adjuster, put it into reverse, then rotate the adjuster hard against a stop and re-tighten. This will not apply here, but just relating it as there could be a set procedure to follow.

I've found this

I get most of it, it says to disconnect the cables and and move the shifter arms so it's in 4th gear.
Then says to lock the gear stick with the special tool then re connect the cables in the gearbox.
So when you lock the gear stick in place should it be in 4th or nuetral ?

I suppose the special tool is set for where it needs to be when in 4th gear?

Sounds like it has to be locked in 4th gear position to me. You might be able to fabricate a tool to lock the gear lever in position if you could get sight of one to see how and where it fits.

Bear in mind that without the tool, once you have disconnected the cables you won't have a scooby where 4th actually is on the lever.

I would just get someone to wobble the stick side to side whilst in neutral while you watch the cables at the gear box to see which one moves, that is the one you need to adjust.

I seem to recall you just need toke out the clip and moves the cable forwards or back and reinsert the clip, try your grears and adjust as necessary until you get it spot on

Well I'm at a loss,

I've just tried putting it in reverse by moving the levers on top of the box and it's not going in.

The left / right lever goes fully to where it should, it's the big arm on the gearbox just won't go back, if I roll the car back an inch it goes into reverse

Really annoyed I've just spent over 2k on it and it's still got faults

Just a recap
2 clutches fitted
and Another gearbox
I don't know what else it could be?
Advice please as I'm seriously loosing the plot here

Did you sort this? i have a similar prob with mine, although only in the morning when first used! I reverse off the drive fine, then have to select 1st which is fine but then wont go into reverse a 2nd time...i have to keep trying and eventually it reluctantly goes in. As i say its fine initially, the prob is when selecting 1st and trying to reselect reverse....

Nope , still hard to get reverse.

Weird...you would think it wouldnt be so hard to diagnose. Very irritating though, neighbours must wonder why i sit in the road for a few mins before driving off :( ill have to ask my local garage perhaps when i have it in for discs next month
I'm so baffled by it , im just ignoring it now cause it ****** me off so much, plus i have a long list of jobs to do on the car

if yours only does it first thing in the morning then i would say some new trans fluid may do the trick?

After fixing my driveshaft, rear brake rattle and faulty instrument cluster I'm back on to this problem.

Still not going into reverse properly, I have tried adjusting the cables but made no difference to reverse just made the other gears worse.

For those with an rs clutch, how/ where is your biting point? Mine is very low

Just a recap : before I started the car today I tried reverse and wouldn't go in, fired her up and still wouldn't go in, after going through the gears quickly then trying reverse it went in on like the 4th try

Mines standard clutch, but saying that I don't know...found out it had mods removed previously so I'm not sure...how would I know? Anyway my bite point is low and as you know mate I've had similar issues with reverse to you altho not as bad, mine wouldn't go into reverse a 2nd time while manouevering but after changing gearbox oil for castrol syntrans fe75w the problem has gone...

Only way you would know is by driving another, I may try a trans fluid swap and clutch re bleed, but don't really think it would do it
