General Tyre Wear And Tracking?

280 Views 14 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Davieravie
Whilst having the new exhaust system fitted, I noticed the inside of both front tyres were approaching the limits of the TWI's well before the more meaty bits in the centre.

Is this normal.... as I took it down the local Farmers centre to have it checked out (which gave me the time to get the 2 pipes looking spot on, with their tools
) and they said it was near enough spot on? They made a few tiny minor adjustments to the NS rear and OS front.

Davie,I am no expert as I am only just on my second set of fronts...but mine wore evenly.

I changed them early but would probably have got 12-13000 out of the original fronts quite easily.

Hope this helps

The cars now done 12,000, so both fronts are getting near enough a change, but the wear on the inside of each is very noticable.

My mate had an old Cossie and he said this did the same. If the all singing, dancing laser thingy at the garage said they were fine, what would be causing the excess wear? Is the camber set up like so from the production line?

Are you running the original continental tyres on the front? mine were completly shot on the insides by about 10,000mls, since about 12,000mls i`ve had goodyear f1`s all round. the car as just had it`s 2nd service 22,000mls and the tyres checked all round and they now seem to be wearing very evenly across the front, 6.0 inside and 6.5 outsides on both fronts even the back have 7.0 on them, i was considering having it tracked at demon tweeks but the guys at the garage said "leave well alone it`s just about perfect" so may be this excessive wearing on the insides is down to the tyre construction and not the cars.

Cheers Shaun, yep, they are the original Continentals so maybe its a tyre issue. Im going to go for a set of Avons on the front when these are shot, just under £100 a boot and the guys at Farmers say they are pretty good on the wear, well better than Continentals for a start.

How much you paying for the Goodyears? What are they like, more so in the wet as its Scotland here!

Before my
I had a 2.0TDCI from nearly new. when the time came to change the fronts I was shocked by how badly worn the original Continentals were on the inside. I panicked a bit thinking there was something up with the car but the bloke at the garage told me he sees the same thing day in day out and practically every Focus he has in having their first tyres swapped was the same....

Cheers Baz, seems like the factory fitted Continentals are not compatible with the ST or any Focus then judging by that.

Why fit them in the first place? There must be large brown envelopes floating about Ford HQ and Continental.

Do Ford UK read this forum? Maybe its about time they do. No point building a decent car then fitting crappy rubber boot bits to it.

Have you changed the springs over? Because when i had my ibachs fitted it took them a while to settle and i got through a set of tyres on the front very quickly but after that it settled down and everything is fine again.
Hitting the speed bumps a little bit quicker than you should increases inside tyre wear (the bumps that are just short of a car width). Especially if like me you need to go over 10 everytime you need to leave the estate.

Not much chance of that......its quicker walking about the town now as the place is full of roadworks due to the tram system getting built!
