Facelift Or Pre-facelift?

Hi guys,

I currently own an 03 ST170 and for the past few months have had my mind set on an 08 EO ST3 (inc Mountune conversion and cat back exhaust), which seem to be going for around £15k at best. Obviously mountune on top of that is gonna bring cost nearer £17k.

I hope to get around £4k for mine privately and have been offered £3k by a ford dealer part ex.

If I chose not to go for the facelift I'd be looking for an 07 EO ST3 which has already got the mountune pack so therefore saving me the extra cost.

Although I've done a fair bit of research into both facelift and pre-facelift what I'd basically like to know is what you guys really think is my best option and your general opinions. The main reason I'm attracted to the facelift is mainly the better looks (IMO) and slightly glossier interior and cool start button! I'm looking at taking out a 12k loan so £15k really is my max budget inc sale of my car.

I've been browsing this forum for a month or so and it seems to be one of the best for expertise and general helpfulness and I look forward to becoming an owner member very soon

Thanks in advance

Martin

was not sure about the facelift when it first came out but it grew on me i love the new dash and the power button but imo you have to get EO so that people know it is a
and not a focus with a body kit hope this helps

well iv always liked the pre-facelift much more, have done since the second i saw it. To me it just looks much much more aggressive and stands out from the normal foci!, IMO the facelift looks too similar to zetecs.

Both are awesome tho.
Thanks for fast response guys!

My thoughts exactly on EO, my current 170 is black and I'm a big fan of all the other colours but my one gripe with mine is that it blends in a little TOO much, which has it's benefits but sometimes you want people to know! For me it's more the interior that's drawing me to the facelift as I like both exteriors.

Also without going too far off the subject, and I'm pretty certain this has been mentioned many times before but in keeping within my budget would you say the cost for mountune and exhaust is justified?

Thanks again guys

Every time I go to a meet I have a couple of lads picking up on a couple of new bits and pieces over the pre-facelift and 1 (no names mentioned) is looking at moving to a facelift. Got to admit I love it and if you want to REALLY stand out it has to be an EO!!

As far as the Mountune is concerned I'd say its worth every penny from the ones I've seen and I enjoy my Code Red bits.

Which ever way you go you'll enjoy the cars mate.
Cost of mountune+cat back £1600/£1700 fitted
i prefer the pre facelift i think the facelift isnt as nice but the engine matters ha
I prefer the front end of the pre-facelift and the back end of the facelift. Like someone said, I think the pre-facelift looks more aggressive but would be more than happy with either.
It looks like either one I go for I'm gonna get fun in spades, and I'm starting to sway to the pre-facelift with mountune if I can find one to save me 4k or so. I'll keep looking for one that fits the bill and keep you posted!
I'm going to view an 06 ST3 on friday, was wondering what you guys reckon on the look/spec/price of this one:

Cheers again guys
bit dear imo!

i prefer facelift but got a pre-facelift about 10-11 months ago as I was also buying a house at the time.
Yeah I thought it may be a bit steep for an 06, will bear that in mind. Decided I can't justify the extra cash for the cosmetics of the facelift, but then the pre-facelift isn't exaclty ugly!

Just a word of advise take your time when picking your car don't rush there is plenty out there and definitely get an ST3 you will have the top of the range with all extras also my personnel opinion is there is not enough difference between the pre-facelift and the facelift to justify any extra cash is anything the pre-facelift is more aggresive looking. Hope you get a nice one

Hope you get a nice oneI wouldnt rush for an ST3 - leather seats and only two seats in the back put me off it although I admit I would have liked the other extras....ps - Not that bad a price considering the low mileage even if it is an 06

It's the face lift model for me and in Eo in st3 form and not to rub in you can find a good deal if you look around got mine from a ford dealer they had it as a managers car for 3 months he had it highly speced had just 1500 miles on it at £19000 so as you can see i snapped it up , as for the mountune package i can recommend that as well
I had a Nov 07 st3 before I got my RS... If I were you i'd go for the facelift, and possibly the st2, really think the coloured seats in the interior set the car of much much better, I was always sorry I opted for the leather simply makes the interior bland! Take your time and you'll find the right car, the push button start is deff the nuts for such a car like the st!....you can always get the mountune 6 months down the line also, you'll always wish you'd got the facelift trust me!

Also - leather does not grip you aswell as cloth, first thing I noticed sitting in the ST3 I took for a test drive.

Although tbh it was the other half that told me I was not getting leather seats after experiencing them in my current Volvo... Cold!!

but everyone has their own preferences of course

This one here seems good value, a little barganing and get a few quid of and he's also of the forum according to sticker on window, mountune with exhaust fitted for £1700, so very close to your budget!
Ford gave me £12000 for mine and sold it for £13,500 so I guess they'd offer him £14,000 at best

Thanks for all the opinions guys,

As much as I'd love the facelift, I really can't stretch to 15k so it will be a good year or so before they come down to my budget, which needs to include the full mountune conversion.

Also on leather, if the option for 1/2 leather was in the ST2 as in the st170 as opposed to full cloth, I'd consider it. Even though they can be a tad cold - at least their heated!
