Exhaust Flames

5752 Views 25 Replies 18 Participants Last post by  ST Rick B
I mate was following me home the other night, and when I nail the throttle and change gear around the 4.5-5.5k mark my zaust pops and the could see tiny flames coming out of the exhaust.

I didnt know this flame stuff was possible on the standard exhaust! Ever since I put Performance + map on the car it pops a lot more which is great, a bit like my VXR. I've gone back to DSCi map and this now pops like Perf + too

Is this normal?

Reckon so, probably an side effect of the more generous fuel/air ratio some of the remaps use - the standard map will be set-up to minimise any unspent fuel getting into the cat cos it's not supposed to be good for it.
Cheers

Didnt expect flames though, because of all the cats in the std exhaust. What can happen due to all these pops and bangs? MOT fail on emissions?

Nawwww you wont fail an MOT unless you fit a de-cat (cat bypass pipe).
Just enjoy it!

seen a few flames with a decat but never the standard exhaust
Thats what I thought. Their not propa lambo style flames, but little puffs of them apparently, I haven't seen them because I cant be in 2 places at the same time lol
mine makes this noise as well with a standard exhaust but i dont have a map yet it great
It has been done before ...

The car needs to be driven hard for a while to get the whole exhaust red-hot and then give it some revs, jumping on and off the throttle quickly and flames can be shot out on the upchange or even while stationary ...

The pops mine gives, I wouldn't be suprised at this happening with having a re-map.

I came back over Woodhead last night and found something out... If the exhaust is red hot, clutch down and keep blipping the throttle as you coast... Proper gunshots out the back

Also on full bore upchanges you get massive bangs out of a turbo back exhaust

It was pitch black and I couldn't see any flashes at the back of the car through the mirrors and the walls next to the road weren't lighting up so the flames must be tiny

A couple of guys from the club have followed me before and have told me that the car spits out little blue/orange flames

I think this is the sort of thing you can expect http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdT9r4FImLg

On topic... my ST is completely standard, no mods at all, I can get it to pop quite easily when stationary and on the occasional upshift. Doubt there will be any flames though, or tiny ones if there is, but as someone posted earlier, can't be in two places at once

Right I'm deffo thinking somethings not standard on my so called std exhaust. I pulled up in a petrol station just now, decided to rev it up to 3k and a huge bang haha. Tried it a few times and it was the same. Theres a vid on youtube where someones got a Mongoose full exhaust and his bangs are the same loudness as mine.

Has someone got a pic of the standard downpipe and stuff so I can compare?
gotta love flames here is a vid of mine just from revving it
