Drinking Fuel

5118 Views 65 Replies 31 Participants Last post by  Dazza123
My ST is having a worrying drink problem recently.

Usially if I put £15 in of V Power I can get to work and back 6 times -15 miles each way so 90 miles and like 10 miles to spare. But in the last 3 weeks I'm struggling to get to do my commute 4 times.

What could be causing this? I havent changed anything on my car.

Long shot, but have you had the air con on more to clear the windscreens now the weather is getting worse?
Thats a really good point. I did have it on all week last week to dry the car out. But the week before that and this week now I havent been using it.
To be fair, I usually gauge £10 as giving me 50-60 miles, so £15 of V Power and ninety miles is fairly good going.

Try driving off boost, ie as if your foot is a feather. It is difficult, but possible. I can get mid 30 mpg if I do this. It's just hard becaus ethe engine sounds so good..!

My mental arithmetic suggests you were getting 30 mpg plus on a commute to work, I find that apart from long trips any local driving is in the range 19 to 22 mpg...... your car seems to be very economical to me and now seems to be giving "normal" mpg
I was getting around 30-33mpg on my daily commute due to lots of traffic and no room to pass, so I just shove it into 6th and cruse along, but this has dropped to around 24-27mpg and I haven't changed my driving style at all.

I have noticed every time I fill up the range goes down, I used to get around 115miles, then it went down to around 109 and now I'm getting around 99. And I could work out and know like Wednesday and Saturday I would need to take the de tour and get v power as it's out of my way. But now I find myself taking this more often haha
Jeez - i gave up a long time ago of thinking £10 = 50 - 60 miles! I average 21 mpg. Thats only down side to an incredible car! I do wish it was at least 25-26 but ah, well...
is it due a service?
do you have more weight in the car?
simple things.
maybe try firing some injector cleaner or something or maybe just clean the air filter.

it is a focus ST tho so they do like fuel ALOT!
Although I love the ST (get my second this week!), the way it drinks fuel and the up and coming fuel price rises mean that I will be changing cars in a years time.
the price of fuel has gone up so £15 equals about 12 litres thats why u seem to be getting less mileage

Fuel price is a really good point actually, didnt think of that! V power with me is around 115, I think it was around 108ish when I first had the ST.

I have added dynamat in the rear to reduce rattles, but I've cancelled that out by taking out the boot carpet haha which weighed more then the dynamat anyway

Brought car first week of Oct, so service isnt a problem, mind you it's probably running on
oil, so I might change the plugs, put some mobil 1, as my VXR was much better after doing this.

Do cars use more fuel in the winter?

with the frosts and that, id factor in the heated windscreen and rear window, blowers - all that has an effect, when i have the heated rear and front on the fan speed reduces alot! u can hear it dip if u know what i mean.

Ive given up worrying how much petrol i use to be fair, i dont look at pump price now either if it needs it i just fill it up. the day my card gets rejected is the day i change to a diesel!

That is true, it does dip quite a bit.

lol, I thought that happened when I was driving my VXR this time last year, was doing a temp job which was double milage than usial, and I was using £15 a day, so Lloyds conveniently blocked my card because of all these £15 being drawn every day from the same fuel station at roughly the same time of day haha

Is it right to use v power every time you fill it? I've heard it's 1 in 4? Anyway my missus complains about the mpg and she's always on it, thing is im the one who fills it

It's better to stick with the same fuel i'd say - it takes a tank or 2 for the ECU to adjust to running with different octanes so doing 1 tank in 4 will mean it's continually swapping between settings for regular and super unleaded.
