didnt know that

so it wont work on a new car if the previous hasnt been flashed to stock?

Correct.

Although I think some of the new DS products allow flashing onto two cars under specific conditions - although you would have to check with them for the detail.

However, generally speaking the "traditional" DS handsets will only allow the map to be loaded onto one car at a time. Each time you want to load the map onto a different car, you will need to flash the first car back to stock. When you then load the map onto the second car you will "consume" a life from the handset.

the original handsets can only flash one car at a time.

the pc based version can flash 2 but you have to have purchased the "buddy" system
