Hi All,

Just a quick query.

Where the wing mirror attaches to the door, should there be some sort of padding material between the two?

Thanks.

Surely wing mirrors attach to the wings, door mirrors attach to the doors馃槅, sorry just being pedantic, I thought there should be some foam there, but can鈥檛 be positive.

Yes, theres a foam insert - see the pic below with rubbish-y red arrows. One mirror has the insert and one is missing it (but it should be present on both)

These are from an RS, but will be the same for ST mirrors, my PFL has the same

Thanks all.

I'm basically just trying to find the source of a whistling noise that occurs when I pick up speed. I'm sure it's due to a piece of trim and there does seem to be a small gap between the wing mirror and door panel.

Hi All,

Well I've finally found the cause of the whistling. See below.

I went for a drive today with a roll of tape in hand and used it on various bits of trim while I was out and about. The whistling stopped when I put some tape over the area marked in the image.

The thing is the passenger side mirror has this gap as it's where the mirror is hinged, but there is no whistling on that side. The only thing I have noticed is that the gap on the drivers side mirror is slightly wider than it is on the passenger side. Makes me wonder if something happened to the mirror prior to me owning the car.

The only issue I have now is how to remedy the problem. If it was a fixed piece of trim I could easily fill in the gap, but as this part of the hinge that isn't going to work.

If this is a hinge, you can't try filling it, unless you can maybe add something to one side or the other to reduce the gap. Maybe you can block/reduce the exit of the air flow?

The mirrors on either side are different angles, due to the need to see down the sides of the car from the drivers seat, that is why the gaps are different.

You could maybe get some black tape & fold it back on itself so that half of the tape stays adhesive & half is doubled over. Then stick the sticky part to the fixed part of the 'door' mirror housing with the other half covering the gap? Not sure how long it would stay there though given wind & rain etc?

Thanks All.

On closer inspection I'd swear that the drivers side mirror is aftermarket. When I compare it to the passenger side there are some slight differences.

Hi All,

I have a further update to report which I think positively answers the question about the whistling noise.

Was having a look at the drivers side and passenger side mirrors today and discovered something which makes me believe I've found the source of the problem. See the images below.

With the drivers side mirror open I was able to see daylight between the bottom of the mirror cover and the support. When I do the same with the Passenger side mirror the rubber gasket is sealing the gap so I can't anything. The question is, is it possible to get hold of the rubber gasket and is it an easy job to install?

If I were you I'd prove that this is the problem first with a bit of duct tape, before trying to source replacements!

Great result! I would imagine the grommet comes pre-fitted to the mirror assembly, which probably makes it unlikely to find separately. Could you live with a bit of "black and nasty" long term, or perhaps cut a bit of black foam to fill the hole?
