Here is a current thread on a mainly US centric site, volvospeed.com concerning cracking of the other wide bore engine found in the now discontinued S60R/V70 R cars. Generally the narrower bore 2.3 and 2.4l engines only get into difficulties way over 400bhp.

This is a totally different engine to that in the ST, but it shares the very same bore diameter and spacing, few other common parts are most likely crank and rods/pistons and cams with the 'RS'.

In the first post is a link to another US site, turbobricks. 'whiteblocks' are all the 4, 5 and 6 pot ally. engines of the last 16/17years, redblocks are the earlier iron engines in the older RWD Volvos'
