Hi, got stuck in Sheffield in Deep Snow and noticed a clutch burning smell as i was trying to get the car moving

, how are my chances that I haven't damaged the clutch and how much is a new one?

Doubt you've damaged it mate unless it's a regular occurance. Bit like your tyres - When they smell it wears them a bit but not massive damage

I had the same issue before xmas, would like to know myself

Hope it's not a problem as I'm fairly certain an RS clutch is £900 fitted

Mind you I got the same smell in my ST170 reversing up a steep incline, and it was fine for the 2 1/2 years I had it.

What Simo said was my understanding, it's probably just a bit more wear and tear than normal but nothing serious. Just can't help but get a bit paranoid with a bill like that as a possibility, knowing how much torque etc the mountune puts out

It smells horrible, like a broken down bus type smell lol, horrible burning type smell

yeah i was just thinking, dont understand how you would burn the clutch in this weather surly any resistance just results in wheel spin?

i got that smell 2day on my way home, took me nearly 4 hours 2 get home, but the traffic was moving that slow that i was on and off the bite all the time just crawling so i think it was because of that for me, plus it only started to smell about 10 mins before i got home. never smelt it before and iv had the car 12 months now.

I had the same thing happen to me, a week before Xmas.
I needed to get up an icy incline and took the opportunity to over take a few large rear wheel drive cars that had got completely stuck...I had to do it because the snow was falling heavy, it was getting dark and it was a bad area - no way was I abandoning my ST in that vicinity!
Made it almost to the top before I lost traction and got wheelspin - took me about a minute to power up the last few feet using a high gear and careful clutchwork.
Clutch still smells awful everytime I get in the car...hope I've not done permanent damage.
Ironically, my partner DID burn out her clutch the following day on her Focus 1.6...cost her £300 fitted but presumably a cheaper clutch than on an ST?

that dosnt sound good, as i understand it once you can smell it the damage has been done. Theres a couple of threads about replacing the clutch but basically the stronger RS clutch is £950 including fitting.
