Hi

Wondering if anybody could help me, yesterday had my alternator fail. I have managed to source a recon alternator and wondered if there was a guide how to change the alternator yourself.
I have made a start removed the wheel arch liner and moved the airbox out of the way, i am stuck on how to get onto the fan belt tensioner and then how to get on the alternator mounting bolts, any help would be greatly appreciated...

QUOTE(troy45 @ 9 Jan 2010, 04:59 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Don't know the whole procedure but info i've seen has the inlet manifold being taken off to get to it at the front of the engine bay.

was that info on here cant seem to find much on it except most people seem to take it back to the dealers

Im assuming this job has been done now, if it has please let us know which way you did it.
There seems to be a 50/50 split about the best way to get these out and i found this on the passionford site.

Jack the car up.
Remove the drivers wheel and arch liner.
Remove the airbox and twist out of the way (ECU wiring is in the way for complete removal).
Remove recirculation valve thingy and pipe
Untension the 2 belts and remove.
Undo bolts on alternator and wiring to it.
Remove alternator.
Remove tensioner just underneath
Replace tensioner with new one (you have to remove the alternator to remove this part anyway and they are known for breaking).
Replace as per removal.

Very fiddly job the first time you do it.

I have been looking into how to do this job as i prefer working on my own cars and hate handing cash over to frauds

my st is an 06 with 42000 on the clock now so alternator is maybe on borrowed time.

I finally managed to do it.

1) Take of filter air filter housing and all plastic trim around the top of grill, remove ecu wiring on the end..

2) remove air inlet system from top of the inlet manifold 6 * bolts on the underside, 1 big pipe and small pipe underneath..

3) jack car up take of wheel arch lining and slacken of tension with torx 50mm bit while slipping the belt off.

4) then jiggle alternator out

Its a pig of a job took me bout 4 hours in all and broke a pipe which dealers want £70 for but am virtually there now..
