I get a noise when I start my engine... when it idles it sounds like belt whirling (sic) noise, might even be bearing whirling noise

... it stops/goes very quite when I dip the clutch. Any ideas... think I might have to go a dealer... but not in this weather!

Sounds like it could be the clutch release bearing ?

A small amount of bearing noise isn't necessarily a problem although it will be exacerbated by the current ambient temperature.
Worth getting it on record in case it deteriorates though.

definatley the clutch release bearing mate. should be ok as long as it doent get any worse. if the weather ever warms up, it will probably go away.

ta... it has been doing it when it was warmer.... though when the car is warmed up I dont get any noise.... see what happens when it gets warmer...if it ever does

Mine does exactly the same, started in the cold weather, its in the local Ford garage at the moment as the warranty runs out soon. Ford dealer said its normal but cant tell me what it is??? After contacting Ford customer relations finally agreed to take gearbox out and investigate.
