Average Speed Camera's - Cardiff To Newport.

Hi All,
Firstly, apologies for not being so active on here lately, only I've spent the best part of the last few months working away in Portugal.

I travelled back home down the M4 again last Saturday from Heathrow and was wondering if anyone knows if anyone has actually been caught for doing more than the 50 mph average on the Cardiff to Newport stretch?

On Saturday I was past many times by people obviously going well over 50 mph (as I was already doing 49.999999 mph myself
). Do they know something we don't, or are they likely to expect a fine through the post sometime soon?

Travelling back up to Heathrow on Wednesday and will be back out in Portugal for another couple of weeks working in the sun

Ian.

P.S. I'll be thinking of you all in this terrible weather as I'm sipping on ****tails by the pool after work on Thursday

If I'm thinking of the same stretch as you mentioned, doesn't the speed cameras only work on the East bound side? Could be wrong though. But I was thinking the same as you.
Hi Trist,
No mate, they're definitely on both sides of the M4.

Fair enough, oh well at least you know definitely you wont get anything shocking from Mr Postie

I have come across this phenomena on a few occassions around the country and just put it down to the fact that a significant portion of the motoring public are stupid.

I have noticed many motorists going over 50 mph on this stretch every time i use it and have wondered if they know something we dont.

especallly when they slow down to 50 mph to pass the camera

although i have noticed if you pass the cameras when driveing alongside a large lorry etc (depending on position of cameras )
the camera cant clock you and leaves you free to cruise along at your chosen speed

So, any offers to be a guinea pig (just so we can find out)?
I recon that if someone was prepared to travel at a steady 60 mph instead of 50, then we'll find out sooner rather than later

The funny thing is that I've never ever heard of anyone getting a speeding ticket for breaking the 50 mph average speed limit, even though lots of people seem to do it regularly.

When I was driving through the Newport to Cardiff stretch last Saturday, I was in the outside lane doing a steady 49.9999 mph
When some cheeky git came up behind me and flashed me to let him through. The cheeky git gave me a look too as he was tearing off
. I was thinking though that sooner than later he's going to get a visit from the postie and he's going to be sorry.

this is old news though

there is also a posibility that the speeding cars you see, might have false plates or even no front plate stolen etc
but more than likely just numptys
I think the thing is if you are doing 60 on the speedo, then in reality this is more like a true 55/56, the cameras dont do you for 1mph over they allow a little bit, but of course you dont know what they are set to, so you may well get away with 60 but i wouldnt want to try it..
go through there at night, look closely at the cameras and you will see that not all are working !!
some are dummies !!!
the working ones have infra red leds on.

I wont be testing it out though !!

Speedo accuracy is a big factor.
I'd drive such a route at 50mph by my Road Angel but this would equate to 55(ish) on the speedometer.

I use the RoadAngel in such a situation. This means, as Alb says, I am actually doing around 55 by my speedo. In turn, this means I am catching and overtaking a number of cars that are solely relying on THEIR speedos.....(and no....not their swimming trunks.)
Don't have any evidence or hard facts to prove this .....but

Speaking to my sister about this very topic only last week (she lives in West Wales) & travels that stretch with her colleagues regularly.

she said between them they have heared of lots of people being "done" especially in the early days !!!!

Apparently the little brown envelope does seem to take longer to arrive too !!!

Sorry I not a volunteer either
Hi Dave,
That's ok, but lets put your plates on my car first... That'll really confuse them

Put the wife's KA plates on it,that will screw with them.lol
I had the wonderful experience today of driving that stretch of wonderful road ....in the Bosses car .... forgot how good cruise control is at governing your speed ........ anyway ......

there i am sat slowly over taking cars with the speed set at 50 and what do i see in the rear view mirror ..... some blinking jugger numpty about to hitch a ride (well he would just about fit in the Mondeo estate) ........

the cheeky devil had the nerve to flash his lights violently at me as if i was some sunday driver out for a cruise .... he then decided, as i refused to break the speed limit to pass the cars in the slow lane, to fly past me in the outside lane !!! ..... what an **** !!!

Please someone tell the powers that be to turn them camera's on to catch idiots like him

I heard on the Welsh news a few days ago that the average speed camera's on that stretch are being reviewed. I'm not sure if the powers to be are considering taking them away, or raising the speed limit to one that's more realistic.

Also, I smiled yesterday as I passed one of the fixed Gatso camera's on the Cardiff stretch that was turned 90 degrees to the road. Not sure how it got that way, but well done to whoever did it
.
