Hi guys,

Potentially picking up my ST3 in two weeks time and ringing around trying to get the best insurance quote possible. I'm 22 (23 next week), 3 years NCB, no claims/penalities/convictions and held my licence for 5 years. Naturally there will be no 'one glove fits all' solution here but Greenlight have quoted me £922 with a £500 excess... does this seem a good ballpark to 'similar' aged drivers?

Tried a few other insurers like Sky and Adrian Flux - Sky in particular were great just from a customer service point of view and I'll be happily ringing them at renewal time - but they won't quote based on having had no experience of a performance vehicle. Chris Knott is a no-go as I'm only coming up to 23.

Maybe I should stick with Admiral as suggested and look at keeping the car a little more 'standard' for my first year of ownership before I go wanting to stick mods on it. It seems I can get that price down to around £700 with a £250 excess and including national breakdown cover. Least then a year down the line I can look at getting a batch of mods done in one go and then getting quotes from the specialist insurers. On the other hand does anyone have an idea how a full exhaust / Eibachs would affect an Admiral policy for price? Drastically?

Anyone else I should be knocking for a quote?

Cheers guys,

Matt.

Hi Matt,

thanks for the kind words, as you say, the lack of experience on a similar car was the killer for us. The price you have had does seem very competitive though.

Thanks for trying us and hopefully we can give you a competitive quotation next year.

Kidn regards

You can't have too many quotes. I'd keep trying the different companies. If you are around a year away from getting a decent price drop if you keep the car standard I think that is a realistic option.

Have you tried Elephant? When I got my ST my existing company would not insure it without a tracker, then had an excess of £500. Elephant quoted £350 without a tracker and my excess is £160. The Mongoose exhaust cost about £30 to add from memory.

I'd go for elephant/admiral. I'm about £600 a year with mountune included and 4 years NCB.

When I turn 25 I'll give the specialist insurers on this site a try.

Blimey - I've just tried Elephant...

£620 with £150 excess inc of national breakdown cover... and the missus on the policy as well! I can get that down to £590 if I use the 'Bonus Accelerator' thing... Not sure how that works but that's very cheap...!

I found that when i added my wife on to the policy as a second driver the premium came down abit (i don't have any no claims bonus, i had a theft claim last year and have 3 points but am aged 31) whereas she had 7 years no claims bonus.

Might be worth adding a parent on the policy or something like that and see what happens, and you'll also have the option of them driving the car fully comp if required?

Andy

Ah, just read your last post and that looks a very good quote, bonus accellerator OK but you can get the extra 2 months (ie full 12 months) cover for only £30 more if the figures you quoted are right... You could also ask how much they are charging for the breakdown cover and shop around for it online as you will probably find it cheaper elsewhere
