Alernator Whine
My alternator has started to whine?
Started car today and instantly there was a whine coming from the engine.
The whine increases with revs then seems to disappear when on the move but comes back again when slowing.
I have no battery lights etc. and the noise doesn't go when I pull the dipstick. I did get a grating sound a few weeks ago but put it down to a stone in the calliper as it went and never reappeared.
I've had the voltage up on the display and it's only reading 11.5 volts, should be 14.4 right?
Other thing I noticed yesterday is that the rear heated screen wasn't working very well.

I would agree with Troy. I have replaced my alternator and that was the sound mine was making when it was on it's last legs

Extra load during the winter months with heated seats, screens, lights and heaters all take its toll !! Dont doubt there will be a few more, .... mine included as its at that age.

Just what I thought I just hunted down my FLUKE and at idle 11.8 volts at the battery = goosed chocolate alternator

Can't believe the alternator can go at such low mileage! Mine went on Wednesday morning. The battery light only came on less than a mile from work, I started to lose power from the turbo, air con packed in and then finally the power steering started to fail. I just managed to get into my work car park! Luckily the guys at Profile Automotive were able to fix it on that day, they picked it up in the morning and picked me up from work as well to collect the car! Awesome service.
