A little disappointed with the brakes

712 Views 13 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  colinmcg71
I’ve come from a Seat Leon Cupra R with huge brembos, so I appreciate there’s some need to get used to the Ford brakes, but I’ve not been impressed with them today (picked up the ST today)

What upgrades have people made and how are you finding them?

Has anyone had any of the big brake kits?

Is it picked up today brand new? They need a bit of time to bed in. It can also take a bit of adjustment to get used to the way the EBB feels to get the most out of it as it’s brake by wire.

EDIT
Can see it’s 2019 so unless place you bought it from just changed brakes or pads then it shouldn’t need bedding in. Perhaps just give yourself a bit of time to adjust to the EBB, but it’s probably not going to compare to big brembos. I’d think you could fit the bigger brakes from the track pack if you wanted.

EDIT 2
If you do it yourself or get a local garage to change the brakes just be aware because of the EBB the car has to be hooked up to a laptop and go through a service procedure when the fluid is changed.

(y)Its probably worth checking what brakes it has fitted. If its recently been done before it was sold chances are they fitted some old rubbish that was cheap from Euros rather than genuine discs and pads.

If they are anything like the Mk3.5 they are borderline scary when charging on :)

I overcooked mines last week on a spirited drive and its the one area I'm going to address over the next couple of weeks once the snow goes away.

Go to Ford and order the parts for the Brembo kit that comes with the new ST track pack - I think its around £850 for the all parts needed and then you need someone to fit them for you

I just fitted some yellow stuff pads and genuine Ford discs to my mk3, seem pretty good for the road.

The brakes on tbe MK4 are excellent, quite a step up on the mk 3 and as good as a Cupra’s. If they’re not there’s something wrong. The lack of anyone “upgrading them topics” is a clue. The servo is electric on the mk4 not pneumatic which gives a stronger feel.
Found it quite easy to get the brakes to fade on spirited back road blasts so decided to upgrade to the Brembos from the Track Pack.
This included the calipers, discs, pads, spring & pin kits, hoses, and some small spacers to centre the caliper on the disc.

Quite an improvement!

Cool! I didn't know there was a kit out there. I do know that the Track Pack knuckle has a different caliper offset, but you kit has spacers that correct it. The caliper and disc are incidentally from the Mach-E.

It's not a kit as such, just collected all the parts from the Track Pack which as you say come mostly from the Mach-E :giggle:

A friend on the Mk4 ST facebook group had them machined up.
