530d vs R36

Hi all

As you may know, I sold my ST3 about 6 months ago and while I miss the car and loved owning it, I'm glad I moved on. That being said, I got an E60 530d M Sport in its place. Unfortunately, I got an auto with 115k miles on the clock and I just can't like it. It's surprisingly noisy on the move, the auto box isn't that intelligent and often changes mid-corner and the accelerator seems to act as all-or-nothing. It just feels very 'soul-less' and it's not like it's that refined to make up for it! I drove another E60 at my local dealer to make sure it wasn't mine, and that was exactly the same!

I've just been offered a straight swap with a Passat R36. Two years newer, 40k miles with the DSG box.

I think I'd prefer the roar of the petrol V6, the fact the car's newer and the DSG over a conventional torque converter auto. Then again, it is a 5 series vs Passat!

What do you guys think?!

Yeah it's a VERY quick car! I think the problem is that wind noise is surprisingly higher than a Mondeo, the engine is very gruff (even for a diesel) and I shouldn't have got the automatic!

Maybe I'm just too picky these days but I can't help thinking the R36 might actually be more fun overall, even if it isn't quite as good as the Beemer for handling.

It really comes back to the fact that one is a VW Passat and one is a BMW 5er!

I'd agree that you need to check the tax out as it won't be a cheap motor to run, it will be more than the ST anyway...

Of the two though, I'd have the Passat. Yes the other one has the badge but it is just a bit 'old man' for me and the fact it is a conventional auto would be a non starter for me. The DSG will be excellent in comparison....

I'm leaning towards the R36, I have to say. I know it'll be more fun than the BM, but a little voice in my head (i.e. my wife!) still keeps saying "You're swapping a BMW 5 series for a VW Passat!"

I like to try and qualify it by saying "I'm swapping a

BMW 5 series for a great VW Passat!"

I'm disappointed to here such a bad review on the 530D as I'd love go get one next in M Sport trim with all the extras. Could have waited and got one instead of the ST but wanted a bit of
fun with a fast Ford first

There's nothing wrong with the E60 - it is genuinely very good to drive, exceptionally good handling for such a massive car. The problem lies in the fact I bought it with an auto box. And for the times you're not tanning it, it is generally quite unrefined. My father in law's old Mk4 Mondeo 2.0 TDCI was infinitely more refined and hushed on the go and, to be honest, didn't really handle any worse than the 5 series. I've never been a fan of BMW interiors but I sort of overlooked that as the 5 series is OK.

All in all, I wouldn't do another mile in the E60.
