would it be possible to connect 2 standard intercoolers together or would the work outweigh the price

yes it would be possible but you have to consider that silicone tubeing is expencive..... is there room to get the extra pipework in there.... also mounting points for the second intercooler i think would be cheaper and easyer just to get the airtec gen 3 good value for money
