Hi all,

I know its almost a year away but if the plan is started now then it could materialize!! Is anyone up for doing about 5 days away? (7 days if you are travelling from the UK) We can meet up around JHQ/Elmpt (Germany/Holland border.), I can arrange accommodation, head from there to the Nurburgring and spend the night at any of the hotels/B&B's, then down and spend a night around German Bavaria from Bavaria through Switzerland and hit Italy via the Stevlio pass. Returning via a slightly different route to pick up some different roads and finishing off with a day at the Nurburgring. I'm sure it wont be cheap and that will just be the fuel, but I'm pretty sure it will be a once in a lifetime trip.

I know things arent specific but I'd like to know if there is any interest, I'm definately going to be doing it as I've got way to much time off work in August. This is not just open to BFG members its open to everyone and I'll be able to sort accommodation for the night of meeting up and the final night before heading home (where ever it may be!!). It will be an awesome trip down some very memorable roads and would love the company of some SToc members with me.

There's atleast another 2 people willing to make the trip at the moment, obviously there is a lot of things that can change before next year. If you think you could make the trip just let me know so I can start planning specific routes and B&B's.

Hopefully see some of you for this trip.

UPDATED

I've been looking into how I can help with the charity "Help for Heroes" something that is very close to most squaddies hearts and the current figures for serving personnel of the HM FORCES that have died within Afghanistan is now sat at 234.

My plan to assist the charity by sticking as closely to the above mentioned route as possible but to cover 5 miles for every soldier, sailor or airman that has died in Afghanistan, this figure I'm sure will increase before August next year. I dont want to take any fun away from anyone who is willing to take this trip with me but the more people we get involved the possibility of getting more coverage and with this the possibility of sponsorship from various companies.

There will be NO change for those interested in making the trip other than possible having some sponsorship stickers put on their cars which the cost will be covered by the company sponsoring the event. (Possibly room to put some business one of our site sponsors way) I will also be trying to get a few "car mad" celebrities involved to help push the event and possibly take part, there are several that have assisted Help for Heroes in the past and again I will be only looking at playing on their celebrity status to gain further interest.

The route itself will be from my camp, Elmpt Station via The Nurburgring and onto the Stelvio National Park in Italy returning the same route, without taking into consideration any laps of the 'ring the trip itself is going to be coming in at 572 miles each way. God forbid there are more deaths in Afghanistan but that will dictate the exact route and possibly the amount of laps of the 'ring we complete to return back to Elmpt Station as close to the figure as possible.

I'm going to be looking at getting it publicised as much as possible after gaining permission from my official chain and Help for Heroes. So please bear with me whilst I get the planning process started. Anyone and everyone will be welcome to make the trip which is looking likely to take place either in the 3rd/4th week August, once I have confirmation of dates I can do it I will post on here.

Thanks for reading everyone.

Gord,

I've just logged onto the site and by the sounds of it, it would be good to meet up with them, I've left a message and hopefully they'll get back to us and we can sort it out. The only downside is that they are looking at July, I cant rearrange my trip dates as I dont return from Afghanistan until the 2nd week of August. Hopefully we can sort something out though. Would be good to travel with a larger group and get some friendly banter going with another club.

Any more for any more?

Com'mon Fishy, you know you want to!!

Be wary if this turns into a big event with convoys of cars. I know a well known company who arranged a European driving tour and the police saw the convoys and did not like it. The end result were all cars impounded and €1000 fine per passenger. It was almost 12 month before a motoring lawyer successfully argued this was a tour, not a Gumball style rally. If I remember correctly, due to the likes of the Gumball, there are now rules about driving in convoys in some European countries.

Mark, thanks for your warning, as long as we stick to all the road regulations and save putting the foot down for the racetrack I dont believe we will have any trouble with going through these countries, I've made similar trips in the past through Switzerland down to Italy in groups of up to 10 cars and have only ever had smiles from the authorities. Groups such as us are bring much needed revenue into these more remote areas that have previously relied upon the ski industry to keep them going, they are now seeing a much wider tourist bracket with people driving their roads in groups and staying at the hotels.

If it does look like there will be problems we can always break down into smaller groups and organise meeting up points along the way, but first of all lets see how many of you are interested in a nice driving holiday!!

There are FAR FAR too many killjoys in the world !! i would hope that our group would be mature enough to enjoy the driving and not cause problems with the authoritys.

Was that aimed at me? If so I was just passing on a word of warning with regards to the German authorities. I personally know a few people who were on this tour and parted with about €5000 between them, cars impounded and they weren't breaking any laws apart from driving in a group.

The German police even stopped our little group of 4 cars on our spirited drive from Spa-Nurburg this weekend. I say stopped, it was more a road block after reports of a GT3RS, 2x M3 CSL and a T25 Impreza were making good progress

As you mentioned, smaller group work much better and don't attract the same attention. I'm sure you'll be fine, enjoy the trip.

No Mark,

It was'nt aimed at you, more at the overly PC world we live in, that we would EVEN have to think about being hassled by jobsworth coppers in Europe pal.

Mark,

As you are aware, I'm fully up to date on the rules and regulations inside Germany, however I have never had any problems with the GCP with regards to convoys of vehicles. Squaddies are often travelling in convoy whether it be work or going to and from sporting events. When in convoy with the "nicer" cars again there have never been any problems and on occasions have had the cops come over for a chat about the cars. As long as you dont kick the **** out of things and they believe you are driving sensibly for the type of car you are in there are very few reasons that they stop you. The Swiss can on the other hand look down on large convoys of vehicles no matter how you are driving which is why I've always split into smaller groups to go through Switzerland, however plenty of stops for brews and chats have always been the order of the day so we can continue to drive as a group. Italy are again more along the lines of the Germans, as long as you dont be seen to be driving like a fool they will not stop you, too much paper work that will interupt the afternoon snooze!!

Again thanks for the warning but I've spent a lot longer driving throughout the whole of Europe than almost everyone I know, 10 years this side of the water and every country that originally belonged to the EU visited, most of the new comers have had a visit from me now too, but thats usually been with work!!

Lets try and keep this thread on topic please and let me know if you are interested in the trip!! (I'll be deleting some of the none topic related pieces in the next couple of days, this will allow time for people to have a read first)
