I'm going to start a project thread for the puma I picked up this morning.

It's a 2000 Ford Puma 1.7 Millennium edition with just over 74k miles. For those who don't know the millennium edition was to celebrate fords involvement in the millennium experience.

The millennium edition wasn't just specific to the puma either, there was a MK1 focus and MK1 Ka version too all Sharing the same zinc yellow paint.

Anyway back to the puma, it was a limited run of 1000 cars. All had leather recaro seats, special millennium 9 spoke alloys heated mirrors and front screen, a/c and the 6000 cd unit. Also they weren't issued a build number unless you applied for it when placing your order, so some are numbered and some aren't (mine is believed to be 662).

Anyway, I picked it up this morning from barrow.

And drove back what should have been 45 miles, but ended up being close to 60 due to having to avoid flood water.

There's a few problems, which is to be expected in a 21 year old ford. Nothing major but stuff that would drive me crazy if I left them.

The boot takes several pushes of the button to open.
Rear wiper doesn't self park and stops wherever you turn it off.
The 3 button key fob doesn't work all the time.
Has a **** stereo.
It has cheap nasty tyres.

So nothing to bad.

Already having the service items waiting.

I got started this evening, although just the air and pollen filters as it was getting dark and I'm still waiting for the sump plug to arrive.

Both the air and pollen filter had been recently change, but I changed them for new anyway.

The pollen filter was a joy to change, unlike the MK2 st it took literally seconds to swap out. Although the filter in place was cheap and wasn't the correct size and was loose in the housing.

I replaced it with a carbon activated correct size Mann filter.

The boot opening was sorted, and now opens first time. This was caused by the 4 copper contacts and 4 brass prongs being tarnished and the locking mechanism being a bit gummed up. The contacts were cleaned up and the lock mechanism was taken out and cleaned and oiled.

Did you manage to find one without wheel arch rust, if so, that is a rare beast.
Absolutely - I cannot remember seeing one without a completely rotted out rear end, although to be honest I rarely see one full stop these days. I think they suffered the same curse as a lot of Fiestas of the same age. From memory, Ford had factories in Germany, Spain and Belgium to name a few and depending where the car was assembled was a significant factor in the rot lottery.

Rear arches. For some reason my phone doesn't like the yellow paint and makes it look pale and washed out.

Also while going through some of the paperwork I found this, the original build sheet.

Yeah I believe it was the Spanish ones that had the biggest rust problem, even worse was the Ka’s they built, some even came from the showroom with bubbles under the arches, anyone would think they were lancia’s. 😆

I removed the overly complicated and naff Kenwood stereo with the much simpler and far better sounding Sony deckless stereo I removed from the 924 last week.

The sony is not an expensive stereo but it's in my eyes a lot better. It's not as bright and is dimmable, has half the buttons the Kenwood has, is far easier to navigate while driving, sounds better and does what I want with far fewer button presses.

I also cleaned out the prehistoric style maf.

It's not visible in the picture but there was a noticeable build up of stuff on the 2 wires, half a can of carb cleaner and electrical contact cleaner and it's all nice and clean and much smoother through the rev range.

The Puma was a car that helped Ford recover from the damage caused by the Mk3 Fiesta and especially the Mk5 Escort. The probe probably deserves to go this list as well.

A recovery started by the Mk1 Mondeo and finalised by the Mk1 Focus (at which point other manufacturers had to go back to the drawing board).

Looks like a great purchase. I owned a Millennium Mark 1 Focus for 5 years. Loved the zinc yellow paint which always cut and polished very nicely.. !.8 zetec that ran as sweet as a nut to 126k miles. Very sorry the day I sold it, was in my top 3 of Ford cars that I have owned.

I also managed to semi fix the 3 button remote fob. Initially the fob would only work intermittently, so first thing I tried was a new battery. This made no difference so I pulled the fob apart and noticed the boot pop button in pieces and as the metal cover moved around randomly shorting and causing the fob to randomly work and not work. Also I noticed the battery contacts were slightly bent and not making a good contact with the PCB. These were bent back into shape and a small piece of heat shrink placed over the top of the highest microchip to stop it shorting on the battery. Hey presto, it works and even more surprisingly It didn't need reprogramming even though the batter had been in and out several times and for 10-15 minutes at some points.

Anyway I've order a new key blank with 3 button fob and will get it cut and programmed.

Always liked the look of the Puma, especially the Racing Puma, they always look like they’re on 4x4 suspension, definitely a candidate for lowering I think.

A 30mm drop all round is on the cards when it's time to replace the suspension, I have my eye on the bilstein b8 kit.

Attempted the oil change this evening, unfortunately it didn't go to plan.
Dropped the oil with no problems.

The sump plug was a bit tight for my liking on an aluminium sump but came off relatively easily.

Water Fluid Liquid Gas Concrete

Then it came to the oil filter, God knows what the guy who fit it was thinking but it's unbelievably tight. I tired the usual oil filter cup style thing which wouldn't grip it, there wasn't enough room to get my chain style tool around and I couldn't find my 3 arm jaw tighten as you undo style tool. So for now I've had to put clean oil in with a dirty filter. So that's just over 4lt of oil waisted as I'm going to have to do it again when the new oil filter tool arrives.

Anyway while I was out I changed the candle power side lights for some of the led bulbs I used on the st.
