Interesting reading .................... glad I stuck £53 worth of Tesco's finest in the tank yesterday.

Although I do believe that higher octane fuel does give more power and economy, I'm sure that test is a load of codswallop, the increases shown are unbelievably high, the test looks like it was paid for by Tesco and if indeed it was accurate the results would make standard unleaded about as defunct as a Betamax video recorder

im nearly at the end of my 3rd tank of vpower - the difference from regular is very small and i average 2mpg more on it. But i'm not sure its worth the 10p a litre ore than regular

Higher Octane ratings reduces or eliminates the occurance of "knock" in high performance engines... I always thought any BHP increase is an indirect consequence of High Octane fuel rather than as a direct result of it, more a case of enabling of the high performance engine to run better. Well thats my interpretation based on some idle reading on the effects of octane ratings...

 Thats correct and on an engine like the STs it can take advantage due to the fact that it constantly decreases the ignition advance untill it detects detonation then increases it accordingly! So if you run higher octane fuel it will give more power! However in my experience the gains although looking big on paper do not show up as you drive it! I would not think that most drivers could detect a gain or loss of even 10 bhp in thier cars performance without employing some measuring device! But as the adverts say..........Every Little Helps!

If the Ecu detects Knock it retards the ignition so therefore you lose power
Super unleaded is supposed to minimise knock.
In reality the power loss is minimal and the knock would probably only occur on a highly modded ST.
This is why most people notice little difference.
Im sure most of the remaps are optimised to run on at least 97ron which is why some people say their ST goes rubbish on 95ron.
either way running 95ron won't do any harm to an ST because of its clever cloggs ECU.
will you notice the ignition retarded in day to day driving :can:
its hardly gonna make much difference at the traffic light grand prix.
Fuel is very much like tyres in the respect that everyone has their favourite.
As for tesco's figures!
Its tescos for god sake!
if their fuel is so much better half the racing world would be using it!
and it would be emblazoned on every F1 and rally car!
18% what a complete and utter load of Barry white!

 Modern ECUs can utilise the extra octane rating when present then back it off when you put 95 in Stingy! On older cars this didnt happen so they did run rubbish on 95 octane! By the way i think you will find a lot of BTCC teams use Tesco 99 and that its the official fuel of the British Rally Championship!

Im not Knocking tesco 99 fishy (pardon the pun)
But 18% :thud:
Im a believer in running super unleaded but its not giving massive power increases (i wish)
in modded St's I believe it makes the most of what mods you've made.
Oh and Does jason potato and the rest of them get clubcard points

I agree with you buddy, 18% must be exaggerated. Super not only gives you a slight performance and mpg increase, but I believe it leaves less deposits on the injectors and on the combustion chamber. Better in the long term for the car

Jason Potato,

Yes, but that second run was when the RR operator was wearing yellow socks. That's worth at LEAST 25bhp.
