It's not that simple though as I have been faced with a similar incident when I was travelling along a dual carriage way at 40mph which I used to travel every day but didn't know it had been reduced to 30mph (lack of attention on my part) and overtook a Toyota Yaris only to be pulled over at the next set of lights after he shown his warrant car.

He wasn't the happiest of chaps and read me the riot act and apparently he could radio for a traffic car to attend and deal with the offence on his word alone which I dont know if it is true but if so you could also be charged with failing to stop once he has identified himself.

I must point out though that this was in broad daylight and I never got out my car which is always locked and spoke to him through a open passenger window, if he requested I got out then I would either insist on a traffic car attending or to go to the nearest police station to sort it out.

Why did he read the riot act because you overtook him doing only 10mph over the limit?

I could understand the pulling over with you being stationary along side the car but if I was overtaking someone on a dual carriageway and they held up a badge whilst I driving along, regardless of whether I knew what it was I wouldn't stop! Whilst driving a car it could be anything, it's not like you'd be able to see any great detail.

True, If I had been shown it whilst passing him I would probably not have noticed or give him a smile and held up my Blockbuster card but the point I am making is that you still have to be careful to not make the situation worse by not stopping but only as long as you feel safe to do so.

As for his attitude he was plain clothed so I think they hold themselves far above normal officers that he shouldn't have to deal with menial offences, either that or he got up out of the wrong side of the bed

Best to just bite your tongue, apologise and be on your best behaviour when stopped by the cops. You might not agree with what they're saying, but better to get a telling-off than a ticket! And they don't have to be traffic cops (or even on-duty!) to do you for a traffic offence, any officer can do you for any offence...

So just be nice, say sorry and accept their 'advice'. ;-)

That's exactly what I did and it was clear he had no intention of actually 'booking' me... he wanted to have a go 'just because you've got a nice, fast car' ... :yep:

And I stopped because you never know what he might do if I didnt. But I'm paranoid enough without this sort of thing happening.

I really think he saw the ST behind and didnt like it with him in an old boggo Astra. Maybe I do need to get something anonymous for a while til my points have expired...

Or join the police, then you can drive one as fast as you like, legally, without the fear of the repercussions of writing it off

You did the right thing, chances are he wasn't a 'car' person, and therefore probably thought 'boy-racer' (not knowing that you don't tend to get skanky chav-types driving focus st's!
